Coventry 4 Good invited a group of volunteers from IT company Perkin Elmer to lend a hand clearing and preparing a community plot at Cheylesmore Allotments, joining forces with the allotments’ regular volunteers. The plot had not been used for a while and was overgrown with grass and weeds – so volunteers dug the turf, raked and levelled the ground and finished the day by planting vegetables.
Some of Perkin Elmer’s volunteers had come from outside Coventry to take part. They commented: “We really enjoyed spending time together working in the sunshine and meeting other people. Digging the allotments was hard work, but knowing it would help the local community to plant and grow their own food spurred us all on. Seeing what we had achieved at the end of the day was extremely rewarding. We wish the local community all the best and hope the plot proves to be very fruitful.”
In turn, the organisers and volunteers from Cheylesmore Allotments were very grateful to the volunteers from Perkin Elmer for giving up their time to help out.
