Coventry University became the first organisation in the City to donate goods through the new Coventry 4 Good scheme.  The University supplied 20 computers for use by voluntary groups in the city who lack the funds to purchase ICT equipment to support their activity with some of the most vulnerable people within the city.  University staff gave their time to help prepare, pack and load the computers ready for collection by the Coventry 4 Good team who transported the equipment to the Community Hub where Whitefriars Housing staff volunteered to help unload and set up the computers in the community room in Paul Stacey House.

The picture above shows the twenty computers donated by Coventry University for use by local community groups stacked ready for loading at the Sir William Lyons Building.  Jonathan Ames from Coventry University’s ITS team who prepared the computers for collection shows his support for the Coventry 4 Good Initiative Laura Cole, Project Officer in the Corporate Partnership Unit who organised the activity, added “We’re delighted to have been able to make a difference through the donation of these computers, and we hope it will help Coventry 4 Good  continue its good work supporting and promoting local causes and communities”.

Mabel Muuduri from Imani said “Most of women we support didn’t go to school; they lack the confidence to use a computer for everyday tasks like paying bills.  Our ladies don’t have computers at home but now thanks to Coventry University and Coventry 4 Good we will be able to show them, with support from a tutor, how to do things using a computer that will make their life easier.”

The PCs will also benefit three other grassroots community organisations: Eurosoma, Sahal and Sudanese Community Association.  All three organisations run supplementary schools for young people to help them improve their performance in school.  It will provide young people who do not have access to a computer at home with a PC on which to do their homework.  The pictures below show two of young people from Sahal - Mohamad and Lomzee Sindi Sahal - who were delighted to receive the new computers.  Project Manager Abdifatah Elmi from Sahal said “We are very thankful for the support from Coventry University and Coventry4Good our existing computer equipment is worn out and this will mean more young people can benefit from help with homework.  This kit will really help us help our community.”
